Extra WordPress Theme Review
Being a magazine theme, Extra features a lot of content on the home page. The page begins with a small bar with the social media links, a search field and a newsflash of the trending items.
And then, there is the main navigation menu. As Extra comes integrated with the mega menu feature, it is possible to display all the necessary links in the navigation section. There is a unique animation style for the drop-down menus.
Extra WordPress Theme Review
If you don’t like the default header style, there are two additional header styles for you. It is possible to customize the color, font styling and sizes for each of these styles.
There is a medium-sized slider in the front page. You can use this slider to focus on the latest, most popular or some specific news items. And down below, various posts are displayed from different categories in different sorting orders.
For the single posts, there is a sidebar on the right side. And for the pages, you can choose from the left sidebar, right sidebar or full-width layouts.
Extra comes with two layouts for the blog page – regular and masonry. The proper layout shows the posts with a large preview of the featured image. On the other hand, the masonry view provides a two-column view with smaller featured images.
‘Tabbed Posts‘ is a new module in the Extra theme. By using this module, you can easily display more content within a limited space. You can display posts from different categories in each tab. The tabs will display one post with a large image and three other in smaller sizes.
And if you want to highlight your photo-centric posts, the ‘Post Carousel‘ module is designed especially for you. This module will display posts horizontally with the primary focus on the featured images.
Displaying advertisement is an integral part of any news or magazine website. And Extra comes fully equipped for that task too. By utilizing the ‘Advertisement‘ or ‘Code‘ module, you can quickly display any ads in any place you want.
Extra Theme Settings
This ePanel is the standard panel in all themes from ElegantThemes.
You can find it over Extra -> Theme Options.
The ePanel offers a lot of standard customization options like a logo, favicon, navigation, sidebar, SEO settings, custom codes and AD management.
How to Use Theme Customization Options?
Next option is Theme Customizer.
While you can choose the layouts for posts and pages in the Divi editor, the customization options are located elsewhere.
You can access the customization options in Extra -> Theme Customizer.
You can also access it from the Appearance -> Live Customizer page. The available options are divided into several sections.
The ‘General Settings‘ section includes the layout settings, typography settings and background settings. Among them, the typography settings sub-section, you can choose the heading and body font along with their colors and sizes.
The ‘Header & Navigation Settings‘ section includes the necessary options for customizing the header and navigation menu options. The ‘Footer Settings’ section includes the layout, typography, and the footer elements options.
And for customizing the buttons, there is a dedicated section titled ‘Buttons‘. You can choose the text size, color, background color, order styling, font, etc. for the buttons. All of these options are available for the button hover styles too.
The ‘Social Media Networks‘ includes the options to provide links to various social media networks.
‘Site Identity’ section includes options like the site title, tagline and the favicon. And if you want to apply a background image to the whole website, you can do that from the ‘Background Image‘ section.
From the ‘Menus‘ section, you can choose the menus for primary, secondary and footer menus. The ‘Widgets‘ section hosts all the five different widgetized locations.
You can add widgets to any of these locations from this section. ‘Static Front Page,’ the last section allows you to choose a static front page and the default category layout.
Editing User Roles
Role Editor is a very useful feature recently added to all themes of ElegantThemes. This feature allows you to edit user roles without using any external plugin. You can enable or disable any roles for Editors, Authors, Contributors or other Administrators.
The Divi Builder
If you are familiar with the Divi theme, you will be at home with the Extra theme too. However, the builder options are entirely suitable for beginners too. Once you get used to the options, you will find them very useful for building custom layouts. While the new theme is based on the Divi builder, it focuses more on the requirements of online publications.
The Divi Builder has been provided with special category support for the Extra theme. With the help of new post-based modules, it is possible to use the powerful drag and drop page builder on the home page and in the categories.
New modules like the post feed, post carousel, tabbed posts, posts slider, standard blog, masonry blog, etc. will be useful to display content with various styles in different places.
Along with the new ones, all the modules of the Divi builder could be fully customized. You are free to create any layout including the common ones like two columns, three columns, and four columns. And it is possible to add modules in each of these columns.
Ready Made Layouts
There are different types of modules available for various purposes. Once you choose a module, you will find the relevant personalization options in the resulting window. There are three tabs for the Options – General Settings, Advanced Design Settings, and Custom CSS. While the first two tabs include the options for general customization, you can use the last one to provide custom CSS code for that module.
At the bottom, there are three options. ‘Save & Add To Library‘ will insert the module and save the customized module for future usage.
In the middle, there is an icon for previewing the module in desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. The last option, ‘Save & Exit‘ will save the ad module and return to the layout editor.
At the bottom of each section, you will find separate options to create a standard section, full-width section or specialty section. The full-width section has dedicated modules that are specially designed for full-width content.
And if you are looking for complicated designs, you will find the specialty sections useful. There are different layouts with the sidebar on the left and right sides. You can use any of these layouts by clicking on them.
There are some management options for the sections and rows too. You can open the settings by clicking the respective hamburger icon. It is also possible to use parallax effect, apply custom padding and add custom class and ID for the section. All these options are available for the rows too, except the backgrounds. And for both of them, you can provide custom CSS too.
You can re-arrange their location just by dragging and dropping them into the desired locations. It is also possible to move the rows from one section to another and the modules to another row or section.
For all the modules, rows and sections, there are dedicated buttons for cloning them. And for deleting any of these, there are separate ‘X’ buttons on each of them. Clicking any of these buttons will remove the respective element.
Other Exclusive Features
Most modern news, magazine or professional websites feature more than one navigation menus. And Extra comes with that option built-in. Besides the regular navigation, you can set a secondary menu and a footer menu. The footer also has three widgetized sections.
The theme is also provided with social media options. And the custom Social Follow widget will enable you to display links to various social media profiles along with the number of followers. And for maximizing the user interaction, the related posts, and the author information sections are located right after the posts.
User Review Module
Extra also features a ratings and review system, which will be useful for niche-based websites. It is possible to add detailed reviews with separate breakdowns and provide rating for each point. The average rating for the review will be automatically calculated and displayed. There is a custom widget for displaying recent reviews.
You can also allow the visitors to rate your posts. As they rate the posts, the average rating will change too. Other than being an indicator of the post’s popularity, it is also possible to sort the posts according to their average rating.
Last but not the least, Extra is also fully compatible with WooCommerce. With the help of this feature, you can quickly create a fully functional online store in your website. What’s more, there is also a dedicated page template for the e-commerce site.
